Children and adolescents are exposed to traumatic events more frequently than we may realize. Trauma exposure during childhood has been shown to be associated with a host of short-term and long-term physical and mental health problems.  

In this webinar, presented by Dr. Glenn Saxe, participants learned about the complexity of traumatic experiences and techniques to help clients with those experiences.  Specific suggestions and ideas will be shared to enhance the therapeutic relationship so that clinicians can attend to the needs of children who have traumatic experiences.

Presenter Biography

Dr. Glenn Saxe is the Chair, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine and Director, NYU Child Study Center.   He was most recently the Director of the Mental Health Informatics Laboratory at Children’s Hospital Boston and the Director of the Children’s Hospital Center for Refugee Trauma and Resilience, an intervention development center within the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.  His primary area of research is dedicated to the identification of the biobehavioral processes that lead to traumatic stress in children so that knowledge of these processes can lead to improved treatments.  He was the Principal Investigator of two NIMH grants dedicated to investigating theses processes in longitudinal cohorts of children with burn and non-burn injuries.  His efforts to understand the complexity of variables controlling the emergence and persistence of traumatic stress in children lead to his work adapting conceptual framework of Informatics and Network Science.  Dr. Saxe uses knowledge gained from this research to develop and evaluate interventions.  He is the principal developer of Trauma Systems Therapy (TST), a widely used intervention model for traumatized children.
